What can Southern Tier Industries offer your business? Southern Tier Industries (STI) is a multifaceted vocational enterprise, providing training and employment to people with disabilities. A division of Chemung ARC, STI is dedicated to developing vocational skills and good work habits in the people we serve as a way of increasing independence and assisting individuals to become productive and contributing members of the community. Personal growth and a sense of self-worth are achieved and enhanced. Ultimately, our goal is to have those in our vocational program working for employers in the community, receiving a paycheck from a community employer...being included in the community! Our services include: School to Work Program This program assists students with disabilities in transitioning from high school through activities such as career exploration, job shadowing, and job readiness skills. Packaging & Assembly / Sub-Contracting Services Pay by the piece, not by the hour. Don't pay for coffee breaks, machine downtime or production bottlenecks. Don't pay for fringe benefits like insurance, vacations and sick time. Only pay for the number of items completed to YOUR Quality Standards. Custodial Services We provide custodial services to over 300,000 square feet of commercial, residential, industrial and medical space per day. Food Service & Catering All aspects of food service, take-out, and catering for business meetings and functions. Records Management Services Vital records protection, store your documents on media. Secure document destruction. On-Site Team Employment Small groups of individuals work as a team at various businesses. Each team has a supervisor who serves as liaison with the employer. Southern Tier Industries (STI), a division of Chemung ARC, was established in 1961. With a 15,000 square foot facility providing distribution, warehouse space and a variety of packaging and assembly capabilities, STI is well equipped to meet your needs. With abilities ranging from automated polybagging and polywrapping, kit packaging and parts assembly, drill & tapping, machine shop production, and bar coding. STI is a smart alternative for any company. We have a trained work force of 140, comprised primarily of individuals with developmental disabilities. With combined sales of $7 million over the past 10 years, STI has customers throughout the region. There are currently three sub-components within the program: vending, catering, and cafeteria operations. 
Trainees simultaneously receive vocational training in all areas of food service, with a focus on a real work environment. The objective of this training is to prepare adults with developmental disabilities for competitive employment within the community. Specialized training is available in such areas as food preparation, cafeteria serving, warewashing, table bussing and general utility. In conjunction with our Vocational Rehabilitation Department, trainees receive life skills training that also aids in their vocational training. Records Management services has provided the regional community quality data imaging for the past 17 years. Our focus has primarily been medical, historical, property, educational and business records, with an eye toward the ever-increasing demand of CD-ROM storage from a variety of small and large businesses. Payroll, employee and other essential business records stored on CD-ROM facilitate fast retrieval of data and eliminate storage. STI uses state-of-the-art planetary cameras that produce a high quality microfilm. Our fully equipped facility can film, fiche, and index all your documents, in-house. Completed microfilm is available in rolls, fiche, or cartridges. STI also offers secure document destruction, confidential shredding of all your documents. A small team of individuals works at a community-based site with a STI supervisor. The team members are paid by STI. Current enclaves include Seneca Beverage, Thomas and Betts, Central Recycling, and the Department of Social Services. This program is seen as a stepping stone, teaching necessary skills that enable individuals to move on to competitive employment. We can bring a team to your site for short or long term jobs. “I have been involved in a scanning project at the Chemung County Department of Social Services for the last one and half years. We contracted with [STI] for prepping and scanning our Temporary Assistance case files. This has been a huge task. The staff [at STI] is tremendous! STEP places adults with developmental disabilities in a wide variety of competitive jobs and trains them at the job site. Applicants are loyal, appreciative and have an outstanding attendance record. Ongoing support is provided by experienced STEP job coaches who are always just a phone call away to assist both employer and employee. Should the nature of the job change for any reason, STI retrains. The service is cost free and tax incentives may apply.
